Designing Inside a Mall
Mall fit-outs come with rules, tight programmes and night works. Here is how we plan for them from day one.
Start with the design criteria
Every mall has its own fit-out guide: shopfront heights, signage zones, materials, fire rules and approval steps. We read it before we sketch, so the concept is built inside the rules rather than forced into them later.
Respect the ceiling
The space above a retail unit is often crowded with sprinklers, ducts and cable trays. We coordinate early, which is how a layered ceiling or a feature light can still work in a low unit.
Plan for the programme
Many malls allow noisy work only at night and give a fixed handover date. Drawings, approvals and long-lead items are lined up so the contractor can build without waiting on decisions.
Make the shopfront count
A shopper decides in a few seconds whether to walk in. A strong portal, a clear brand moment and an open first view of the product do more work than any amount of decoration inside.
We put this into practice at The Travel Store, KL East Mall, completed in January 2024.
